Best of luck. New York wasn't for me, either, but not because it disappointed me. I love New York! I just know that I'm not where I would want to be as an artist to live in New York, and I didn't want to start my professional career there. That doesn't mean I'll never live there, but for right now I'll probably pursue every other option.
On another note, musical theatre happens all over the country. You can be a very successful musical theatre performer just about anywhere. A lot of the work originates in New York, but look into other cities. Go to the actor's equity website and look up casting calls.
I live in a part of Chicago that's more like Hoover. It's an awesome area, huge mall, and I'm less than 30 minutes away from the city. Keep in mind that you can still have the type of life you're used to while pursuing your dreams.

Anyway, I meant for my point to be: anytime something doesn't agree with a preconceived notion, it's a disappointment. But definitely give New York a second chance...and go with a friend who knows a little bit about New York, too. It can be overwhelming the first time. :)
