The bands that I like, I almost always prefer live -- to start off with the really cheesy examples, all them American Idol kids? Yeah, so much effing better live. Kelly Clarkson, David Cook, Carrie Underwood... in the studio they sound way too polished and generic, but live I think their lives are gorgeous.
There are other bands like MGMT, Black Kids, etc. that I prefer in the studio because they sort of base their sound OFF synthesizers and that something is really difficult to do live. And of course, there are bands that just completely suck live because they don't have the talent to back it up - I don't think I even need to give examples for this one since it's pretty intuitive.
I like a lot of acoustic singers live, too. John Mayer and Vienna Teng and whatnot. Like you said, more passion and sincerity ♥
I have yet to go to a concert where I felt, "Wow, they were just awful live, I wish I'd just listened to the CD instead." I prefer live, overall--it's not just about the artist, it's about being there with tens, hundreds, thousands of people who are all there for the same reason: because they love this artist's music.
