Hey guys - it's time for Tuesday Talk (throws on cheesy grin) today, when we'll be supplying you with discussion topics about the most random music-related things and hoping you'll play along with our insanity.

I don't know about you guys, but I am such a fan of musical covers. As in, songs recorded by one artist being reinterpretated by another ( Read more... )

I think the Pumpkins cover of Fleetwood Mac's Landslide is one of the most wonderful songs in existence. Almost like Fleetwood Mac wrote it for Billy Corgan. Sometimes they're downright unnecessary, though, like Alien Ant Farm covering Michael Jackson-- they sound like they are trying to sound like MJ, and obviously MJ sounds more like MJ than they ever will. Chantal Krevniazuk's Leaving on a Jet Plane is also wonderful.

I didn't even know Landslide was a cover, tbh! I have the SP version only, and it is really lovely - I d/led it a while back and threw it onto a bunch of mixes. There's such a heartbreaking quality to it. *sob*

I actually didn't mind the AAF cover - nowhere as good as the original, of course, but I enjoyed the rock line to it.

I keep forgetting 'Leaving On A Jet Plane' is a cover - it used to be one of my favorite songs growing up :p I took a special liking to Chantal since we share a first name, and I moved around a lot as a kid so songs about saying goodbye seemed oddly appropriate.

Sufjan Stevens' cover of "What Goes On" by the Beatles. Better than the original. The Beatles were legendary, but oh my god, Sufjan Stevens is glorious.

I usually don't listen to covers, unless they're particularly spectacular. "What Goes On" is probably the only cover I can name off the top of my head that beats the original and stands alone as a good song.

I haven't heard that one yet - youtubing it shortly afterwards :D

It's sometimes hard to find a good cover admist all the crap out there. Searching is fun, though, I'll admit - I like seeing how different lyrics/melodies can be redone :)

The Boyce Ave covers are very cool. I particularly like the one I posted and his '4 Minutes' - it's neat to see a pop/electronica song being turned into an acoustic thing. I've only heard the Postal Service version of Such Great Heights - what others would you recommend? As for Hallelujah, I definitely think Jeff Buckley's is my favorite - I've only heard Jeff's, Leonard Cohen's, Jason Castro's, and Rufus Wainright's versions, though.

Enjoy the tracks!

i've uploaded a few such great heights covers that i like. some are quite different and might be labelled as a blasphemy to the original, but i'm crazy like that ( ... )

I'm a fan of covers, especially when they lead me to new artists I hadn't heard of before. I like listening to covers done in another language, even though I associate them with an Asian music industry factory devoid of originality.

My favourite cover at the moment is Emm Gryner's version of "Breathless." It's really pretty, and a far cry from the pop sensibilities of the original.

covers - reflections on Hallelujah adrian22 November 2 2008, 14:29:02 UTC
fyi, BBC Radio has just broadcast "The Fourth, the Fifth, The Minor Fall". It's an one hour documentary celebrating the song "Hallelujah" in all its variations. It's online for the next week (eg. November 1 - 7, '08) @

It's about Hallelujah, but, the program shows how artists and listeners can find very different things in the same song, and that applies to all covers!
