Why are people so negative

I can't understand why people are so negative.. and morbid. It's like they seek out bad things to make them look good. AS warped as that sounds it seems the most logical. Why would you purposly seek out bad stories. EVERYTIME my mother comes over or I talk to her she has another story of a baby that has died of SIDS. How is that in any way
