Yeah, yeah, no posts. But this is too good not to share. Based on my personal library and other people who have a lot of the same books, LibraryThing can whip up a list of recommendations.

Topping the list is Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War. I can already guess this will be good.

3. The Histories- Herotodus
6. The Annals of Imperial ( Read more... )

[18:26] Kinleiva: "Another story, composed in either the early New Kingdom or the late Middle Kingdom but still circulating in the eighth to sixth centuries, concerns King Pepy II and one of his generals. Unfortunately, it is very fragmentary, and only two episodes have been partially preserved; in one the king is sneaking around secretly at night to visit the general with whom he is in love. It is impossible to reconstruct the story: it may have been a comic tale or one reflecting Egyptian disapproval of homosexuality."
[18:28] Byzantine Birder: Hmmm
[18:29] Byzantine Birder: I seem to remember Cruz-Uribe mentioning something like that
[18:29] Kinleiva: there's quite a gap between his life and the story, Pepy II is near the end of the old kingdom
[18:31] Kinleiva: wiki has one sentence on the story of totally neutral language about visiting a general
