OK - I'm sure you've all noticed that all of my icons are more or less stolen ( Read more... )

The cropping really depends on the dimension of your crop.

What program are you using?

This is embarassing - but I'm using the standard Windows Photo Editor. *hides*

Do you mean that I should define the size of the icon, as I'm saving the image? I see that Picture Manager lets you define in terms of pixels the width and height... would that help? What is the size of an icon?

*is hopeless...*

Yeah that would help a lot. LJ lets you use 100x100 pixel icons. When I crop images I always crop to the same height width... 398x398 for example so that when I resize (in PSP) it doesn't mess it up when I go to 100x100. In PS, you can set it to auto resize when you crop an image so as soon as you crop it will resize it to 100x100

I don't know how windows photo editor works and that might be part of the problem. ;)

I use both Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro.

OK - this seems to be a real step in the right direction - I just did one using 100x100 when I cropped.

THANKS BABE!

You know that I'm always ridiculously proud when someone is using one of the icons I made, so you really don't have any reason to feel guilty about it because it makes me happy, but I understand perfectly that you want to have your own icons. :)

I'd recommend you to use pictures that aren't smaller or in worse quality than the ones at Getty/Viewimages. If the pic is too small or too blurry/oversharpened, you'll get a bad result. High-res pics are my favourites because they already have reasonable colouring. You need to crop your pictures to a size of 100x100, that's the normal icon size allowed on LJ. There are programmes for that, like IrfanView, a free programme to edit pictures. The programme also has a "sharpen" tool, which makes the pic less blurry after the crop. If you want, I can upload the programme for you.

Am still catching up *hides*

Thanks for yoru tips - I've got a program now that lets me crop to 100x100 before I upload, and I've figured out how to sharpen, too. That makes a big difference in the picture quality!

I've got a new laptop (major yays!) and am trying really hard not to install ANYTHING I don't absolutely need, so have gone cold-turkey off plug-ins, downloads, etc... so far so good.
