One (minor) downside of the expansion, by the way, is that the school building I'm in (right next door to the Gardner) has been a bit rotten-egg-smelly -- something to do with the digging.
Probably sulphur in the groundwater. The summer camp I went to had the same problem. All the showers smelled eggy.
I liked the British ex-art thief, too. He could have stepped right out of a Guy Ritchie film. And I wonder if the pieces will ever be recovered. The descriptions of their supposed treatment make me worry that they're laying in ribbons somewhere.
Guislaine gave me that movie for Christmas, and it's in my short stack of "To Watch" discs. I'm glad you folks liked it.
I couldn't tell from the pictures at the site exactly what the exterior will look like once the re-building is finished. I hope they don't completely cover over the original 19th century appearance.
I believe the expansion is at the back of the current building. So I imagine (hope) that if you were standing on the street, at the current main entrance, the building would look much the same as it does now. My classrooms this semester overlook the construction site -- I'll bring my camera along tomorrow and see if I can get some pictures to post.

Glad to read about the expansion. I've recommended that museum to a number of people who were visiting Boston.
