Koraa/Avatar?

Lots of people seem to like this "Legend of Korra" show, and I've heard the helpful tip that it's viewable free on the Nickelodeon website. But... um... turns out I haven't managed to watch Avatar yet. How important or helpful would it be to see The Last Airbender before leaping into this newer show? Is there anyplace I can conveniently watch that ( Read more... )

If you were anywhere nearby, I'd be happy to lend you Avatar, but uh...

I think you can probably dive into Korra okay; it of course involves some spoilers for the previous series, but mostly along the shocking lines of "the good guys basically won" and which characters ended up together so I don't think it'd detract too much to eventually watch them out of order (or even in parallel). Airbender is 61 episodes, so it'd take a while to catch up. You will, of course, miss lots of little fantastic call-backs that make fans smile, but they're not too critical.

Though, now that I say that, a lot of the fun discussion I've had with fans is about the interesting ways in which the world and its cultures are *changing* in the new series, so there are definitely some well-written levels you'd be missing out on. It's just that it'll probably be good anyway.

What he said. Netflix probably has it on the DVD basis; I think iTunes has it. It may be on Netflix streaming; we don't have it to check.

ATLA is definitely worth watching, either way though! It's a show about genocide for 12-year-olds. Also there are a lot of references grown-ups will get (like one episode basically being an homage to Apocalypse Now, and another being a Cheech & Chong gag). The good guys aren't 100% good, the bad guys aren't (all) 100% bad, there are villainous girls and boys, heroic girls and boys and a giant flying bison catbus. And Foo Foo Cuddlypoops.

The Last Airbender is available streaming on Netflix. That's how we watched it.

My Airbender watching is spotty, and I have enjoyed what I've seen so far of Korra (the two eps that have aired - third is queued up for this evening). There are definitely some treats strewn through those first eps for fans of the original, but if not having seen the original shouldn't impair your enjoyment.
