I don't know where the empha-quotes tendency originates from, though I've seen whole blogs devoted to documenting it ( http://www.unnecessaryquotes.com/ being the easiest to find quickly). I feel like it may be a valid construction in Japanese (you see it in old video games a lot), but I somehow doubt that's the source.
As for the poo, all I can think is they're trying to emphasize the fact that it's basically made of grass, more or less. But uh, yeah.
