Hey, who says peril can't be fun. We did what anyone in mortal peril would do - bribed a guy with a caterpillar tractor to turn our driveway into a luge run.
Now that is a great idea. You need to pile a bunch of people on a toboggan and see if everyone can make it to the end without falling off. This is fun. I used to have a Captain America shield sled and pretend I was a pinball and kareem off trees while descending a steep hill. This was in my misspent youth. Now I just do doughnuts in the van.
Ha - not the most dangerous thing we all do as kids, but close. We had one particularly great run that ended by zipping across a (hopefully) frozen lake, crazy-dangerous but exhilarating.
SNOW SHOVEL OLYMPICS!!!waynefromlorainFebruary 6 2010, 20:41:02 UTC
We got the winter hurricane to Steve. I am currently engaged in the snow shovel Olympics with my neighbors. Some have been disqualified for illegal use of the snowblower. By the looks of the deck through the window, you will not be grilling out anytime soon. I love that stone fireplace by the way. It took a lot of work to build it. How do you make toast on it? I have seen it done with marshmallows, but not with toast.
I don't blame you for missing the warm comfort of Africa. I wouldn't mind going to Australia at this time of year. The Australian Tennis championships at Melbourne as well as a surprise visit to Greenlandgem in Perth. I would like to meet her someday. I am just stuck in the Great White North for now.

I'm afraid shoveling the drive was kinda out of the question - took me half an hour just to clear off my car. And I think Gem is on her way back to Canadia just now so is probably in deeper snow than either of us. Let's hope for pictures.
No real trick to open-fire toast: poke break on the end of a stick, hold it just far enough from the fire to toast it without burning. Never browns evenly and always tastes of smoke. Automatic toasters are why I love living in this century, that and the Ting Tings, obviously.

Naw, I was on my way back from Canadia. I am now in Aus, just in time to watch only the daily highlights of the Olympic Games (meaning: watch the few Aussie contenders/foreign imports compete) and sweat my 'nads off (out?) in the desert again. And if I was in Canadia? I heard twelve degrees (that's Centigrade for you 'Mer'cans) in Vancouver yesterday. Not even mitten weather. :(
We used to make toast over our propane campstove - had a metal plate thing with kind of a wire teepee on it that you rested the bread against to toast. It worked okay. I think I only toasted over an open fire once - lesson learned. Though I do know how to bake cakes using only a cardboard box, some tinfoil, four tincans, an old wire cooling rack, and some charcoal! Thank the Girl Guides for that one.
I do begin the day by cursing the Frost Gods and daring them to smite, but I still think you're being paranoid. I also curse the Gods of Good Manners so if we start seeing lots of public flatulence, mea culpa.
Indeed, but it doesn't seem nearly as impressive. Yet. Oh and next sled you get me, try to keep in mind that I no longer have the ass of a 12-year-old. Perfect size for Tess, tight fit for a strappin' 6 footer.

Such an odd post - flipping between climates and seasons there! :D I love it! That snow must make a refreshing change from Africa... but then, I suppose, you've probably had enough of wet British refreshment to last quite a while
( ... )

Ha - I'm in Key West (currently colder than Vancouver) typing this on my iPhone so more later when I get home. But if you think I'd turn down the chance to go to the worst place on earth, I should introduce myself.
For the nonce, I'll just keep self-medicating with the local hooch. Hemingway's ghost, these locals can drink.

Not just yet. Would like my goddamn snowblower but it is scheduled to be delivered right after the snow, which is what I need to clear the drive so they can deliver it. Irony, what a kick in the sack.
