The Tree is Down and...

...well, and I'm still alive. My estimate on the height of the tree I took out was pretty accurate, I thought 35-40 feet and it was actually 36 and 1/2 feet, but I was way off when it came to the actual size of it. The biggest limb may have weighted 350 pounds and I just never would have thought it from just looking at it from the ground ( Read more... )

Holy crap-sounds like you had a close call! Ah, the adventures of home ownership. (Part of the reason I'm still a renter, hee hee!)

Glad everything worked out okay in the end!

BTW, I had no idea that chainsaws were capable of stalling, by the way. Do you have to "give it gas," like driving a stick shift??

Becca, the next big job around my house will be even more of an adventure, a kitchen re-do.

And yeah, my chainsaw seems to need a bit of gas to keep going, but it might need further adjusting. They have a lot of safety features now like having the chain stop as soon as you let up on the throttle and that probably makes them more in need of fine adjustments.

Thanks for the kind offer Kim, but that won't be necessary. I've already decided to leave any tree over 25 feet to the experts, even smaller ones if they involve power lines. Many of the mishaps that could have happened would have cost far more than hiring a tree service. And that's just in financial damages. I didn't sleep that well the night after the tree job just thinking about what could have happened.

Glad you're still alive. Hopefully you came away from this experience with an idea of what not to do next time.

I suppose you could consider this all in a day's work for a "Do-It-Yourselfer." :)

Hi, Keith. Good to hear from you. Sadly, most of my do-it-yourself projects are inspired by a desire to avoid dealing with strangers.

Kinda like those blind people who develop excellent hearing... ;)

Yeah, kinda. Except there is little excellence in my do-it-yourself ability. :)
