Car Accident
Car Accident
A drumbeat of metal, glass and plastic
Thunders into the night, shuts my eyes,
Forces a cry from my throat.
And then the smell of firecrackers,
The dizzy stumble,
Are you okay?
Yes.
No.
His sister unconscious,
Her head pressed into her lap,
Draped in a burial shroud
I swear.
An airbag sticky with blood.
Another driver yells
You’re going to get killed,
Pull into the median.
Stop shouting at me, sir,
Can’t you see I’m dead?
I swear
I’ve already passed on
As I roll into the muddy ditch.
Thank God, she’s awake now.
And my ears protest her stuttering sobs.
My parents arrive before the sirens,
Are you okay?
Yes.
No.
Thank God you weren’t hurt.
Yes.
The sister’s face is a salty mess,
But she’s okay;
They drove her away
And she spent a night in the hospital.
But I couldn’t sleep, the lights persisted,
Ghosts hanging inside my eyelids.
And the drumbeat echoing in my ears.
