Sounds like fun. I want ducks! I did wonder if the first one might imprint on Jared. I had heard that birds imprint that way but wasn't sure if it was really true or not. I really want a duck.

Ducklings are very very cute. Like big bumblebees with beaks. I've never seen them in the stage before they can float, though, by the time they have appeared they have been floatable (even if getting them out of the water is an interesting activity for their parents).

Adult ducks are funny. I can't compare them with chickens, I know waterfowl better, but ducks are the comedians of the waterfowl.

I thought you were living a remake of The Good Life anyway (without the annoying neighbours). (This is not a bad thing, I loved the programme and it's good to know that people can really still do that sort of thing...)

If they are being looked after by duck parents then they are floatable from birth - the parents preen them with their own oil to make them waterproof. But as Jared and I are tragically lacking in feather oil glands we will have to wait until they are 6 weeks old and develop their own!

I love the description of "big bumblebees with beaks" - that's exactly what my little brown and yellow ones look like!

You're just going to have to grow feathers *g*. I've never seen them at birth, only when they have left the nest with their parents (or they've been left with an 'auntie' while the parents go off and have fun).

I'm always touched when I see a line of cars stopped to let a line of ducklings across the road. Although juvenile Muscovy ducks (we used to call them 'Chernobyl ducks") go around in gangs pretending to be Dick Turpin (they hold up travelers).

Yeah, bumblebee with beaks, and without the buzzing that screams "danger". Very cute indeed. :)

Lovely entry.. and ducklings are fab, especially when they start chasing after you: we babysat.. ducksat? a duckling once when I was a kid and if you walked away it would come scuttling along behind, squeaking, and it loved to go to sleep on my lap, making funny little noises in its sleep. A fox got it soon after we sent it home, sadly :(
