Have you ever written in an unusual place?
Maybe the most unusual place was in the bleachers at a gymnasium while waiting for my kid. The unusual part was how noisy it was.
The word/phrase you know you overuse, but can’t get rid of.
I overuse "was," and I'm trying to substitute better, more descriptive verbs.
Do you keep notes? Do you have a notebook?
Oh, honey. I have notes. I have notes about my notes. And I keep a notebook on me at all times.
What’s the hardest part of a fic to write for you?
The central conflict. I really don't enjoy pitting one human being against another. But it's no kind of story if everyone gets along.
Have you ever based something in your fic on your personal experience? What was it?
Everything I write about libraries, politics and research is based on personal experience.
What’s that one fic you want to write but somehow know you never will?
I have sketched out a story about Petunia Dursley, formatted in present-to-past style. (Do you know what I mean? I don't know what the word for that is.) It's a story that ought to be told, but I despair ever capturing all the plot threads.
What do you usually do when you procrastinate?
I read the internet, especially stupid Facebook. (How many cheese recipes do I need in life?) Or I develop a sudden, crushing need to clean the house.
What’s the funniest typo you’ve made?
I've made so many! But after I fix them, I wipe them from my mind.
Do you listen to music when you write?
I have tinnitus, so when I get deep into writing, I like to create nonverbal soundscapes that distract me from it. Rainfall, ambient music, Bauhaus, jazz, etc.
Your favorite comment a reader has left on your fic?
On my fic The Angel Investor: "I've never before laughed while making a stupid goggle-eyed surprised face, so congratulations on that."
