My problem with Twilight and the resulting obsession stems entirely from how BAD it is. Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, Buffy the Vampire Slayer... hell, even NSync and the Backstreet Boys. They are all really good examples for what they are, with some of them (Lord of the Rings, for example) being SO GOOD that they are able to break barriers and be exemplary in general (and not just a good sci-fi fantasy). NSYNC is terrible music given our current tastes, but for cheesy bubble gum pop, they are phenomenal! Twilight is just... bad. The writing is terrible. The story is terrible. The characters are terrible. The one positive I can really see about it is that more kids are reading, and I'm honestly not sure which is worse, kids reading Twilight or kids not reading at all. One of my friends compared the Twihards to the Browncoats but I say no. Firefly is an exemplary piece of art for what it is. And Twilight is crap. End of story.

I couldn't agree more!! It's tough being an English teacher and seeing my kids read these books. I love that they are reading, but I wish they would read something with a little more literary value. Like the back of a cereal box.

With you completely. I'm a history teacher but we had SSR every day at my school, and I felt the same way. I loved seeing my students engrossed in books but ugh couldn't they be reading something that didn't make girls look like sniveling idiots and didn't read like they were written by a horny 13 year old? Jeeze louise.
