for me, the meta-point is ... should we let the military tell its civilian leadership what to do? I always thought that was how military dictatorships started ... ?

the point isn't, "let's let the military tell civilian leaders what to do," the point is, "when NONE of the civilian leadership of the military has EVER been in any combat situation, perhaps those civilian leaders should weigh the advice of senior military officials a little more carefully. and those military personnel's suggestions shouldn't be brushed off with a simple, 'well, i'm the decider.' and the people of america deserve more than trite reassurances."

As a point of reference, Secretary Rumsfeld was an active duty Navy pilot and served in the Reserves until 1989 when he retired as a Captain.
