1. Afton is an attention whore, plain and simple. Sometimes he tries to be coy obscure it a bit but over all ... naw, LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME!! this mostly comes from mommy and daddy completely ignoring him, which leads to ...
2. He has so many issues caused by the fact that his parents just sucked at parenting. He is not a well-balanced, socialized, or functioning individual. And he never will be, because we all know There Are No Therapists in RR.
3. He's intelligent, but not ... functionally intelligent. He's really book smart but doesn't really get things like cause and effect, etc. Thus his stupid shenanigans are constantly recurring.
4. Afton lives completely in the moment. He is basically singing Mimi's part from Another Day forever.
5. He's a total hypocrite. He scorns religion, yet is totally superstitious. He hates people who become static and frozen in routine, but was basically trapped within his own version of that for most of his life.

1. He is, in general, a very detached person. He doesn't see himself as being a part of any defining social group, and has no real interest in them. To get him to connect with things at all he needs to be with people one on one, otherwise he devolves into a very clinical, cynical view of humanity as a whole.
2. He is, basically, a hard bitchy shell with a gooey easily topped center. After being burned repeatedly by people close to him, he's very cold to people in general. HOWEVER certain things will always ... immediately get him 'not concerned'. Like injured children and animals. (Ritsuka probably tops him so hard because he fills all of the above)
3. While he's good at reading other people and figuring out their issues and hangups, he's not good at giving advice for these things or even acknowledging that they're detrimental. If it doesn't immediately effect the situation negatively what's the problem?
4. He hates himself so much. So much. He's accepted this and treats himself accordingly ( ... )
