Ok, so in Sydney anyone can wander into the Fish Market and buy seafood fresh of the boat. Since my local fishmonger is expensive, has a limited range of stuff, and I'm a bit suspect about its freshness, and is completely lacking in crab I want to go and shop at the market ( Read more... )

Vic Market has a seafood section if you're in town, and my local fishmonger has pretty much everything I can think of and it's decent quality. Maybe you just need to shop around a bit more?

I'm not impressed with the Vic Market prices, and the quality can vary a lot. When it comes to shopping around, in my area, 'there is only one'.
It doesn't totally suck, their atlantic salmon is good, although their prawns are overpriced, and they regularly have the *good* tuna steak....but no crab *wah*, or any shellfish.

I want a proper fish market with unidentifable things in crates and smells of fishy innards!

Yeah, you kinda have to go to the markets at 6am to get the good stuff. If you're ever over my way, Athol road shops have plenty of unidentifiable things in crates - crabs included - and their prices are quite good. You might have to make a special trip out of your local area when you want crabs/shellfish :(

I too have heard this about Footscray Market. It may be the closest thing Melbourne has to an actual 'Fish Market' after all. The Vic Market is nice, but it can be expensive and doesn't really do it for me.
I shall investigate Saturday morning and let you know.
Hopefully I shall leave with something in a shell with rubber bands on it!

Its just not a fish market without a dodgy looking guy in a rubber apron brandishing a hose....
