"A heart is a fragile thing. That's why we protect them so vigorously, give them away so rarely and why it means so much when we do. Some hearts are more fragile than others. Purer somehow. Like crystal in a world of glass, even the way they shatter is beautiful." ~Everwood
He'd gotten home late, and when he crawled into bed she sighed and rolled into him. She could feel the cool air from outside still circling him, and she cuddled up close. His arm wrapped around her tightly as a slight shiver rolled through his body.
"Didn't mean to wake you," he murmured.
"You didn't," she whispered.
"You're up late then."
"Yeah well...you weren't here."
He smiled, his hand rubbing her back slowly. "I'm sorry."
"Don't be."
The truth was, she had been up for a long time thinking. Thinking about her life, their life, and the fact that they'd been together for more than a year by then. And she truly loved him. She felt loved, which she hadn't always felt in her past relationship. With Sheldon, she knew that she was who he went home to, and that he didn't need anything more than her. It made her feel more comfortable than she'd felt...in her entire life.
It made her think about them, and about the things he'd told her throughout the relationship about himself and his past. He'd opened up to her, and she hadn't really done the same. It wasn't him, of course, she just didn't talk about certain things. And he never pushed, which only made her love him more.
"Everything okay?" He asked softly.
She pushed herself up and leaned against his chest, looking down at him. He gazed up at her, his hand moving to brush against her arm. His eyes watched her with concern. "Everything's fine," she nodded.
"Are you sure?"
She ran a finger along his jaw. "I...want to thank you."
"For what?"
"For...everything. For being you."
He frowned slightly. "Who else would I be?"
She leaned in and brushed her lips along his neck to his ear, resting her forehead there.. "No one. I wouldn't want you to be anyone else."
"Good." He kissed her cheek, and she pulled up to look down at him again.
"Shel..." she bit her lip, hesitating, before looking down into his eyes. Him looking back at her calmed the nerves in her stomach, and reassured her of what she was about to do. "I...I want to talk. To...tell you things."
"About what?" He suddenly looked concerned again, worried even.
"About me," she replied.
He relaxed beneath her and brushed her hair back behind her ear. "You don't have to-"
"I know, but it doesn't seem so scary to right now."
Sheldon nodded. "You can tell me anything."
Her eyes closed for a moment and she took a long breath, before opening them again and looking down at him. "Maybe I should start with the 'once upon a time there was a little girl'.."
