“Are those roses?” Colonel John Sheppard questioned in utter incredulity.

“Oh, no,” McKay responded in that 'I messed up something' voice of him and added, “no, no, no.”

Both men looked out of the puddle jumper window in to the Atlantis main control tower and appeared absorbed by the sight. Evidently, at least considering the information their eyes commuted to their brains, the entire main deck had been invaded by something that looked strikingly similar to the rakes of a rosebush. They had sprung up everywhere, connected and separated in within and, which sort of gave it an eerie look, blossomed. It looked prepared for an elvish wedding ceremony.

“No, those aren't roses..?”

“Katie.”

“Dr. Katie Brown the botanist...?” Sheppard asked obviously preferring a fast and easy to understand answer to some botanical-McKay gibberish.

“She told me about this plant before we left for the mission.”

“About this plant?” John wondered openly and examined the organism more intently.

“No,” Rodney snarled and made a face, “not exactly this plant. But nevertheless, she did show me a single rose. She said that a science team had collected it and something about its remarkable characteristics...”

“Apparently,” John interrupted as he sensed a long story coming and wasn't in the mood, “it grows really fast.”

“And it's old.”

“How old? How can it be old? It wasn't here yesterday eating up the control room.”

“The rose. The rose was quite old. Katie told me that she couldn't figure out its cycle. It's always full grown, blossoming...” McKay paused and blushed.

“What?”

“Like our relationship,” Rodney explained with a grin but hastily added, “she said that not me. Not that I don't think...”

“Rodney!” The colonel now yelled, “what is going on here? And where are our people. What about life signs?”

In situations like this, John had come to realize, it was best to hand McKay something to do with is hyperactive brain.

“Yes, there are life signs but according to the puddle jumpers sensors, they are all...asleep,” Rodney finished quietly.

John refrained from asking more questions about the how the sensors could read that sort of thing or why the Atlantis personal was taking a nap. In order to help them, they needed to get some real answers and they weren't going to find those sitting here speculating. In the current situation they needed to focus on the important.

“Whatever did that, doesn't affect us,” he stated and checked the readings himself, “can you check if it's safe to leave?”

“How the hell am I supposed to know that when I don't have the slightest clue what happened here other than a single red rose turning in to a plant conqueror!”

John narrowed his eyes while his mind started working and his personality became wholeheartedly annoyed.

“It was just a question.”

“I'm sorry,” McKay apologized halfheartedly and shrugged, “I really don't know what could have caused,” he haltered and looked outside,
“this. And I think it's not a quantum physics kind of a question.”

“Well, we have to do something. The Daedalus won't be here until the end of the month and our friends out there are definitely in some sort of trouble,” John summed it all up and started packing his gear.

“You are not seriously considering going out there?”

“What else am I supposed to do?”

Rodney McKay hated questions like that. There wasn't an easy answer to that problem and the Colonel was right they had to do something. However, he was a scientific realist with countless personal issues. It's why the little nagging voice of reason inside his head asked in order to suggest the universal safe bet, run.

“We could fly away? Get help?”

“We can't leave them behind. Listen, I'm going. You stay here. If I pass out you get the ship to the alpha side.”

Ten minutes later they concluded that it was safe to be out of the puddle jumper as John didn't even feel tired. He didn't wait for Rodney to follow but took the path up to Colonel Carter's office. Instinct told him that she was the most important to safe. He passed his fellow comrades and various scientists on the way. As the sensors had indicated they seemed all sound asleep. Whatever did this took them out all at once, which explained the strange body positions.

The closer he got to Sam's office, the harder it was to bypass the bushes. The rakes grew thicker together, which wasn't a good sign as it suggested that whatever happened had started up there. He felt surprisingly scared all of the sudden. He knew that he needed to get to Sam as fast as possible and wouldn't let a plant stop him from reaching his destination.

She was sitting in her chair with a rose in here hand. A small drop of blood had tried on her thump. The thorns only injured the skin only lightly. John carefully approached her while examining the surroundings. He studied her face up closely with a fast heartbeat and couldn't stop himself from reaching out. Carefully he brushed a strand of blond hair out of her face before leaning forward to kiss her softly. He wasn't thinking clearly but just reacted. It felt like being in the chair. As if this was something ancient. When his lips touches hers, multiple things happened at once.

Colonel Samantha Carter opened her eyes, the rakes started to shiver and shake before, out of the blue, metamorphosing in to ashes and the Atlantis station awoke to life.
