Title: Electric Doppelland
Author: ubiquirk
Rating: PG13
Word Count: ~650
Prompt: 053: Crossover
Pairing: River/Cameron (from Terminator:  The Sarah Connor Chronicles)
AN:  Set after Serenity.  Convention in River/Jayne shipping has River like Jayne because 1) he’s a fighter like she is and 2) his brain is … um … quieter than other people’s.  But there could be someone else who’s even better at fitting that bill.

The bar was dark and crowded and the perfect place for the brawl that now swirled around River.

She elbowed a man behind her in the face without looking and caught Mal’s eye just as he finished bashing a chair over someone’s head. River arched one eyebrow.

“What?” He grinned in seeming innocence. “A man can’t have a peaceable drink nowadays?” Ripping down a banner that proclaimed ‘Our 8th Year of Unification!’ in gold lettering, he blotted at the blood seeping from his split lip.

A tall woman roared at seeing this and leaped upon Mal’s back, clubbing him over the head with her fists.

River ducked a thrown bottle and came up two steps to the left, again finding the calm at the center of the storm.

Mal staggered backward, inadvertently hitting his assailant against a pillar - though River knew he’d later claim it was tactics - and was lost from her sight as Jayne was forced between them by a man twice his size strangling him. She found the look of controlled panic on his face somewhat comical.

The sound of hard objects meeting flesh resounded around her, louder to the right where Zoe held off three men by making good use of a bar stool. But there was another concentrated source of noise coming from the far left - a place no Serenity crew member had ventured. Tilting her head, and effortlessly tripping a woman about to stick a knife in Jayne’s kidney, River attempted to more carefully identify the person causing the disturbance.

She read nothing.

Turning, she saw bodies being tossed hither and yon as something moved towards her. River ran forward, sidestepping a punch and sending a spinning kick out to catch the man at face level. Upon completing her turn, her senses told her no one would be in her immediate vicinity.

Her senses lied.

She was chest to chest with … with her double.

A double who spoke. “I’ve been observing you. You’re an impressive fighter, calculating weak points and vectors of force with a precision not normally seen in a human.” She punched sideways, sending a man careening backward while remaining rock steady. “I, on the other hand, am a good fighter because I am strong.”

“Your physical manifestation matches mine.” River briefly touched one soft cheek with the tips of her fingers.

“My analysis confirms that our external physical characteristics correspond to within 99.3%, yes.”

River took a half-step back and looked the other woman over slowly before meeting her eyes again. “Your breasts are bigger.”

“I was initially made to appeal to the heterosexual male.”

“I was made to kill.”

“That too.” The other woman stepped close and smiled. “But my original programming completed years ago. I’m able to write my own code now.”

“Control of one’s own behavioral conditioning is to be constantly striven for.” She paused briefly. “Besides, I’m finding it inadequate to have my sexual energy constantly sublimated.”

Her double laughed.

River tilted her head and concentrated, brow creasing. The occupants of the room lay about, some unconscious, others panting from exertion and dizziness. One keened internally in pain - a broken arm - but no one felt fatally wounded.

She could read every person but one - the only other one standing. “I don’t hear you.” She felt her eyes widen as something tightened low in her stomach. “I don’t … I don’t know what you’ll do next.”

Running a hand up River’s arm to cup her shoulder, the other woman leaned in, breath whispering across River’s ear. “Is it exciting?”

River kicked out behind her to stop a man who’d stood to break a bottle over her head, raising one arm to wrap around her double’s waist for balance as her torso tilted forward to brush the other’s curves. A shiver pulsed across her body, a “Yes” escaping her grinning lips before she even had both feet on the ground.
