Character Name: Owen Harper, MD
Series: Torchwood
Age: 27
From When?: Post Exit Wounds, his final death
Inmate/Warden: Warden: while he is something of a dick and overly cynical, he does care about people. And will sacrifice a lot to save them. And maybe he's just tempted by the chance to actually be alive again. Which is the deal he made. If he helps out on the barge, he gets to live again. Really live.
Item: One of the comms that they wear out in the field.
Abilities/Powers: Owen is human. He is, however a fully trained doctor, specializing in alien species and autopsies because of his work at Torchwood. He was the medic for while he worked there as well and a field agent. So he knows how use a gun and all that.
Personality: So Owen is cynical. It's pretty much what defines him, what people associate with him the most and exactly the kind of first impression that he gives off. He's not shy about it. He's not going to hide it because it could hurt someone's feelings. It's how the world is and Owen is usually the first one to point stuff like that out. The bad stuff, the low chances of a plan succeeding, the general stupidity of something. The real side, he calls it, though he does have a tendency to let his pessimism get the advantage over him.
He has a real tendency to be self-centered, to bitch and moan about his own problems while not listening or recognizing the problems of his teammates. Like, he's known that Tosh has been head over heels for him for a while and yet he continues to sleep around, flirt with other women and rebuke every advance that Tosh makes, while not seeming to care if her feelings get hurt. If he takes the moment to recognize the selfish behavior, then he does usually apologize for it or at least he tries to and he seems sincere about it.
He's quick to tell people when he thinks that they're being idiots, especially when it comes to his boss at Torchwood, Jack Harkness. He stands up for what he's thinking and while he can be talked down with reason and has the capability of remaining open minded about something, he does tend to fall into self-destructive moods. And he lets them dictate all of his actions. Generally in one of these moods, one can expect him to become even moodier, more reckless, more pissed off, more driven to save the day, almost like he has to do it to prove his self-worth.
Owen often serves as the comic relief, offering snarky one liners and usually deadpanning the rest of what he has to say. And more often than not, his sarcasm is used to make fun of people. His three favorite things to do are drinking, sleeping and shagging. Though he generally enjoys being a scientist and discovering/exploring alien technology.
He cares about people, under that gruff exterior. He does work at a job designed to save the world after all. If he feels the cause is good enough, he will fight passionately to make it a reality. He tries not to hurt people, because well, he is a doctor. Which isn't to say that he won't, if one of his friends is in danger, and yes he has friends, the bloody people he works with thank you very much, or if it means defending something that he believes in to his core. Like when he shot and tried to kill Jack.
After his death and subsequent resurrection, Owen had something of a crisis of faith. About what life meant, what there was waiting for him on the other side. He was forced to deal with the things that he'd always taken for granted or taken advantage of and he slowly came to mature a little bit. Being somewhat nicer to his coworkers. After going through his self destructive mood, he was itching to do something, anything that was useful. He tried to make peace with the people in his life while he had the second chance. That being said, once he's alive again, he'll probably slip back into his old ways.
So he is going to be in an uncharacteristic good mood for a few days after arriving on the Barge, since he spent weeks on Earth as a zombie, more or less. Alive but unable to do anything that a living, breathing human can do and always feeling like something was missing. So when he comes to the Barge and when he's able to breathe and drink and eat and sleep and fart and shag again, he's really going to love it.
Path to Redemption: n/a
History: Owen was born on Valentine's Day in 1980. He had a stressed relationship with his parents. His mother told him in an argument on his tenth birthday that she only had to love him, not that she had to like him. He wasn't much closer to his dad either. Whether this separation was because of his attitude or if the attitude fed into the separation is unclear.
Fastforward to his early twenties, Owen was already a doctor (self described as brilliant) and engaged to a woman named Katie Russell, who would end up giving him his first experience with alien life and lead him to meeting his future boss, Jack Harkness. Katie was killed during brain surgery by the alien living in her brain, along with all of the doctors in the room.
That was when Owen met Jack, who swept in to clean up the mess and explain what really happened to Katie. Owen didn't believe him at first, and thought he was going crazy after he repeated the story to a psychiatrist. Jack sought him out in the graveyard where Katie was buried and offered Owen a job. After some screaming and venting, he accepted.
By the time he was twenty six, Owen had become fully immersed in the job at Torchwood. He didn't have much of a personal life beyond casual sex. He did have an affair two of his coworkers, first Suzie and then later Gwen when she joined the team. These were both over by the time he met Diane, a pilot that fell through the rift from 1953. She is considered to be the only woman that he's fallen in love with post-Katie. Diane left him after a week of bliss, to fly her plane back into the rift to try and go back home. No one knows where she ended up.
Owen was killed for the first time by Aaron Copley, who was in turn killed by Jack. Before Martha Jones could perform an autopsy on Owen, Jack insisted on trying the second Resurrection Glove on him, unwilling to let Owen go like that. The glove worked and brought him back to life, though it was really Death that fed the energy into Owen's corpse to keep him alive. After Owen defeated Death, he was left in a state of partial life, like a zombie without the need for flesh eating. The energy lent to him by Death started to dissipate slowly, though no one knows how long he would've really had left to live. It could've been thirty minutes or thirty years.
Owen met death for the second and final time when Jack's brother Gray attacked the city of Cardiff, shutting down all power and escape routes. The city's nuclear power plant was about to go into meltdown but through his and Tosh's intervention, the people of Cardiff were saved. Owen was unfortunately trapped in the nuclear facility during its emergency cooldown procedures and subsequently died watching his body decay because of the radiation.
Sample Journal Entry: So I've determined from literally one afternoon of this place that it's going to be the most terrible place that I'll ever go, and most of the people here are annoying or fucking annoying.
But I don't care.
I don't give a tiny rat's arse about any of that right now. I can breathe, it's fucking amazing.
Right. Anyway. Name's Doctor Owen Harper. Who hands out tours of this place? I'm in need of food, a drink and a shag. So hop to.
Sample RP: Owen closed his eyes and sucked in a sharp breath. Held it for ten seconds, slowly ticking off the numbers in his head before he let it out. Fuck, that felt good. So good that he'd been doing nothing but breathing deeply for the past fifteen minutes. One would assume that he was relaxed now but he wasn't. He was twitchy, excited, ready to do something. Anything. Didn't matter one bit what it was.
Though he sort of wanted to hit something. To bruise his knuckles. How bloody brilliant would that be if he bruised and then healed from it? So brilliant that it just might knock shagging off his list of three favorite things to do.
Well, no. No, no, no. That was a lie.
It would knock off sleeping.
He could go without sleeping for a little while longer. There was still something about the darkness, about closing his eyes that he couldn't really shake. But fuck, he wanted a sandwich, and a drink and good shag. Right well. He was a Torchwood agent. There was nothing to say that he couldn't go and get those things. The first two should be pretty easy at least and depending on the kinds of girls here, so should the last.
Right. Right. He needed to get out of this room. He could focus on why it looked exactly like his flat later. Strange afterlife and possibly alien quirks were better examined on a full stomach anyway.
Special Notes: Uh, not really. zombie!Owen is just no fun at all, hence the conditions of his deal.
Oh wait, I'm going to say that he's bringing his gun and the singularity scalpel with him to the Barge but he promises to exercise caution with both of them.
