Detroit.

I'm very fed up with Detroit. I just read an article in Businessweek on how the non-Detroit manufacturers in the Midwest are actually increasing productivity (such as Caterpillar, GE's plane engine plants, etc., while GM is going to lay off a bunch of workers. All of the big three have been losers as of late. From my vantage point, I want to see ( Read more... )

Yeah, killing Detroit's public transportation didn't quite work out like they thought. Detroit automakers aren't doing so well and haven't been for while. It keeps getting worse. It's just so hard to compete with other (read: overseas) companies.

But, Kevin, we still have the train! Lol, the one that runs through Royal Oak.

The automakers haven't seen anything yet IMO. Working in automotive, it's gonna get much worse before it gets better. They shot themselves in the foot, especially GM.

Kevin, I'd claim it was a good move on GM's part for the interests of GM (purchasing the train). Shame on Detroit for selling it (I never knew any of this, I am going off what you said).

In order for Detroit to bloom, people in detroit need to stop pointing fingers at people in suburbs as the cause of their problems. They need to elect a real mayor, not a rap-star-wanna-be, and stop looking for immediate gratification, they need to fix things long term.

Detroit's a shithole and I pretty much avoid it. I don't rank Detroit with Michigan, it's just a cancer in the palm of Michigan ;)

The other industries, they may be hurting, but agreed, automotive is getting beat up badly, so of course they'll be doing better.

They only think in the short-term; what's going to make them money NOW? And it's starting to cost them...or at least their employees.

I never knew that Detroit had a subway. I've been saying for a long while that it needs one. Or at least better public transportation. Have you ever been on the Metro in the Washington, D.C. area? It goes all over the city and far out into the suburbs. I couldn't imagine what our roads would be like if we had all this stuff. I know I'd use it on a regular basis...

Detroit never actually had a subway system, but an "interurban-street car" system. The system was trains that ran on tracks up and down the middle of the roads. It was the second biggest public transit system at the time, I believe.

And it was bought by the Auto industry as they started to grow, eventually, they let it just fall apart to the point that it would cost a ton more to fix the problems than to just shut down operations - thus making Detroiters dependent on automobiles.

The last generation that saw that system in use was my grandmothers, which is a shame.

Ah, I see. I was wondering what would've happened to the tunnels.

My mother was talking about the street cars tonight...she remembers riding them when she was a little girl.

Doesn't surprise me that the auto industry would've bought it and let it fall apart, though...it was competition, after all.
