I am in week 2 of my dance training at the kabuki academy. Japanese dance is so different than ballet or jazz. Completely the opposite feet positioning. I am learning the nuances of kimono wearing too. Its hard work, but I am loving every minute of it.

does it involve a lot of inward toe movement? i'm honestly curious.

yes! exactly!
thats (and hand/head positioning) the major difference between ballet and Japanese dance.

Im so used to "opening up" when I dance: toes out, feet pointed, arms and elbows out.

Japanese dance uses demure inward positioning, toes and knees always in, small shuffling steps, elbows always towards the body, hands in closed-fingered folds.
