This meme appealed to me because it was short and simple and I knew all the answers. ( Read more... )

Now this is a fun meme.

1. a movie - The Living End -- my favorite gay indie film

2. a book - Catch-22 - best book ever written. I've read it 5 times. I often find myself referring to characters or situations in this book. For pure superficial enjoyment (and if you like mysteries) I recommend The Concrete Blonde by Michael Connelly.

3. a musical artist, song, or album
Old 97s -- one of the best alt country acts around.

4. a LiveJournal user not on my friends list: estella7 is one cool chick.

5. what I should have for dinner: I'm on a Greek food kick lately, so how about that?

6. a website

I loved Catch-22. One of the few books that made me laugh out loud. A lot. One thing that sticks in my mind is when somebody said, "Name one rich poet!" And somebody (was it Yossarian?) called him up in the middle of the night and said, "T.S. Eliot!" and hung up. Then the first guy thought it was a military code and he passed it on to somebody else. Cracked me up.

I'll definitely check out The Living End. And Old 97's? Sounds interesting. I love alt country. Have you heard of "Another Country"? It's a compilation of alt country and Americana by different artists.

One of the few books that made me laugh out loud.

Yes! I've said the exact same thing before.

The TS Eliot phone call was made by ex-PFC Wintergreen. And I think somehow it played into the whole feud between Col. Korn and Col. Cathcart, such that one of them became convinced that the other had made the phone call.

So many great storylines. One of my favorites was The Great Loyalty Oath Campaign. Heller had the most wicked sense of the absurd. I loved how the campaign became more and more ridiculous and then Major ______De Coverly blew it out of the water with his "Give me eat," line. I better stop now because I could go on and on about that book.

Anyway, my nickname for the Patriot Act is "The Great Loyalty Oath Campaign."

I have heard of "Another Country." I think a friend of mine may have owned it? But it sounds like something I'd want to own. The Old 97's rock. Their website is http://www.hitbyatrain.com

Thanks for that link.

Major ______ De Coverly! Yes!!! I think I'm going to have to buy that book and read it again. I could use a good laugh right about now. :)

Wow, thanks. These are great. I've never seen an Iranian movie. I bought a Magnetic Fields CD (guess why) and it wasn't what I expected. It wasn't 69 Love Songs. Can't remember the name now.

I'm with you on the Indian food. My favorite!

lol about the Magnetic Fields. I played one of the cds in the car while my father visited. He was not impressed. "They're TALKING. That's not singing..." :D The songs have a Bob Dylan quality to me, so I am a big fan. And like I told my father. If the songwriter includes Camus in a lyric, you've got me.

I am a foreign film fan. Iranian film is particularly strong in children centered films. The White Balloon and Bacheha-Ye aseman (Children of Heaven), an oscar winner, are two stand-outs.

Ditto on Indian. :D

Well, I love Dylan, so I've got to give Magnetic Fields another listen. When it comes to music, my first impressions are frequently wrong. Some of my favorite albums are ones which initially I wasn't crazy about. The CD I have is "Distant Plastic Trees." It's going in the discman tomorrow!

That salmon is making my mouth water, Jaye. Sounds delicious!

Hey, I know what an LP is! Vinyl is making a comeback, you know. I vaguely remember "Regarding Henry" but I never saw it. Sounds intriguing.

What? There's a new G/R fic? I'm off to read it now.

Thanks for the recs!

Recommend to me...

1. a movie

Are you into Christopher Guest films? He's so fucking hysterical Leah. He's totally up your alley! If you haven't seen any of his films, start with "Best in Show" and "A Mighty Wind." You'll pee yourself from laughing so hard.

2. a book

Does fan fic count? ;P

Seriously, I still recommend "The Heart is Deceitful Above all Things." I thought it was fascinating, though a tough read.

3. a musical artist, song, or album

I would definitely recommend some Sarah Harmer for you since she's one of my fave singers and was also the lead singer of Weeping Tile, an alt-country band from *gasp* Canada. I put some of her solo stuff on that cd I gave you (the one Emma pilfered from you) so check it out if you can.

Another one I think you would like is Patty Griffin. She's sort of pop/folk/country. She's amazing!

You have to join the RPS community that I told you about. I refuse to be the only homie going to that special hell! :)

5. what I should have for dinner ( ... )

Homie, I love Christopher Guest. I've seen both those movies. Have you ever seen "This is Spinal Tap"? Hysterical! I have Patty Griffin, too. Must check out Sarah Harmer, since my chances of getting back that CD are slim to none.

And I'll have you know I joined the RPS community yesterday. Now we can go to the special hell together. :)

I knew it! I was almost positive that you would be a Christopher Guest fan (because our senses of humor are so warped). He is the funniest man ever! Seriously, I can watch his films over and over again.

Ironically, "This is Spinal Tap" is the ONLY one I haven't seen yet. I swear every time I try to order it at Blockbuster in my neighborhood, it's out! I'm going to try again this weekend.

Did you see "Waiting for Guffman"? So brilliant.

And Sarah Harmer is fantastic. I really think you'll like her. Ply Emma with some Buffy episodes and steal the cd back! :P

YAY!! And Tracee said she joined too. The Homies in Hell! Sounds good to me!! :)
