So today Windows Vista is officially unleashed on the world...

...and let me say, with absolute certainty though it pains me so, if my next computer can't be packaged with WinXP, I'm buying a Mac ( Read more... )

AACS appears to be hacked in 3 different ways -- 2 of which Microsoft hasn't plugged yet. DRM just doesn't work.

Also, I've been reading up on the Upgrade versions of Vista having an issue (http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070128-8717.html). You have to have a previous version of Windows installed before upgrading. No more clean installs for users upgrading.

True, DRM really doesn't work. Of course, it won't stop MS from stomping all over users trying to stop it, which is why I don't want in on that trip, nor do I want to hack my own system to get stuff to work they way I want it.

At the very least, this sort of stuff will show whether or not MS is truly going to be draconian with things, though I suspect they'll wait a year or so before shutting down any hardware or such.

If they start blocking out hardware because it can be used for pirating, the innocent will be penalized. Someone would then launch a lawsuit. That was an odd tangent and I'm not going into it further.

If it weren't for some video compatibility issues with video, I'd probably stick with Linux. Linux distros would be where I would end up. However, I usually get ticked off with the package systems. RPMs tended to conflict for me. Debian's apt tended to want different versions of the same software to run different software. Gentoo's portage unfortunately sometimes has a requirement of an unstable package for a stable package -- not to mention all that compiling. Although it would be faster on this computer.....

On the video front, I am encouraged with sites like YouTube using Flash Video. That can at least work with the Linux version of Flash.

... if only there were sound drivers for linux for my soundcard...

I'm adopting a wait-and-see until they try something stupid. Until them, I'm staying off Vista. There will eventually be an epic confrontation between good and EULA and at that time "click to sign your rights away" will be set in stone or completely invalidated. Until then I'm not chancing it.

Myself, the only reason why I'm not completely on Linux is Photoshop - it's the only non-freeware, non-open-source piece of software on my computer that wasn't bundled on it upon arrival. I'd like things like flash to be a little more steady for linux (I can play youtube, but the sound quickly goes out of sync), but other than Photoshop, I'd be annoyed with some missing media formats but little else.

I use it for a single use (Photoshop), so I guess I can switch to Mac if backed into a corner on it. Adobe desperately needs Linux support.

I was really happy with the Star's article - I'd been rambling at people privately on this, and people tended to shrug it off. When it's in print (digital or otherwise) by a major newspaper, people start paying attention.

I don't like Macs either, actually - in this case it's just the lesser of two evils, and realistically, the only apps I use are:

1) web browser
2) email
3) Photoshop

and occasionally a sound editor. Given that photoshop was built for the Mac, I guess I can't argue that it's a bad port for it.

Oh, Christ. Just reading the links gave me the willies. The worst part of it is my computer is on the way out, too, so if I do get a new PC I'll be stuck with Vista. >_> I might join you in jumping on the Mac wagon, dirty as I'd feel about it. I get the feeling running Vista would just be dirtier in the long run.

Now if only the lack of a right click mouse on Macs didn't confuse me. XD

One hopes. But MS is pushing this hard, and I'm wondering what kind of incentives they're going to push on companies to only stock Vista.
