Spammers have gone too far.

That's really gross. You should probably actually forward it to Crimestoppers or whomever at Industry Canada is dealing with that stuff these days. A quick scan is not turning it up, but I know there was work going on re: scam email when I was at the Competition Bureau.

Actually, looking a little more, I think I'd forward it to Phonebusters. Just because you know it's bullshit doesn't mean some little old lady isn't going to be terrified for her life.

Thanks! I actually googled the name at the bottom and it brought back some news stories about the scam and how some people have reported it to the police and they determined the emails were originating outside of the country.

Huh.
There are cross-border fraud teams, but I guess there's only so much that can be done.

I hadn't heard of that one on the news, but I guess it's not new after all.

That is a pretty disgusting scam/spam. Even though we might think it's pretty obviously false, there is an ad right above this comment box that proclaims, "I got scammed 27 times" which just goes to show people will fall for anthing.

YUCK. I got one similar to that the other day that was like "I don't know who you are but I know you've been sleeping with my wife and I'm going to kill you for it." I knew it was fake, obviously (especially since I got it at my work/customer service inbox, so it said, "Dear NESST...") but still -- I could see the wrong person being extremely upset by it.

It took me a second to not be upset by it, but I honestly don't think there's anyone in the world who is upset enough with me to hire a hitman - something I consider the realm of bad detective novels anyway.
If you were paranoid, though, I could see being extremely freaked by this - and arranging to pay the $3000.
