It’s been decided. On October 20th, 2010, we will wear purple in honor of the 6 gay boys who committed suicide in recent weeks/months due to homophobic abuse in their homes at at their schools. Purple represents Spirit on the LGBTQ flag and that’s exactly what we’d like all of you to have with you: spirit. Please ( Read more... )

I'm not so sure about the reblogging, etc.

It looks like more than one was a minor, one may not have been gay, and there was no permission sought from the families (minor or not) for use of the pictures.

We can do something more constructive than wearing purple. Really.

Well, in response to your comment:

1. Yes, they were minors. That's part of the problem.

2. One may have been gay. If he isn't, I expect I'll hear about it.

3. The fact that no permission was given IS a sticky spot with me- I didn't realize that, and I'm going to take the picture part of that post off. However, the cause still stands.

4. I would hope that people are ALREADY doing something more constructive. Wearing purple is like wearing a pink bow for Breast Cancer Awareness. It's a symbol- and any witch knows that symbols have power that can be used.

So, I reinforce my endorsement of this decision, and I hope the children's parents give permission soon.

Danke. It's not like I want people in our queer community to commit suicide, not that I'm not going to honor all of our young and old dead (suicide, murder, or disease)... It's just deeply offensive to me to have this tragedy reduced to a fucking click-a-button meme. Sorry for hijacking your journal for my own personal soapbox!

(I *also* really hope people are doing more than just parading the symbol... but you know how often there's the problem of somebody working a spell and then sitting back and waiting, without doing any of the obvious/mundane prep-work....)

october is also domestic violence awareness month, and purple is the color for that too.

(and yes an 'awareness month' is cliche and pointless when awareness should happen all the time, etc. but i get the symbol thing as well...so long as people are doing something constructive in addition to that. during the past several years in the field, i've learned to see both sides of it and understand that not everyone has the stones to work in the midst of the crisis so everyone does what they can...i think as long as the intent is there, it means something even if it is small).

oct 20th is also my birthday.
