Local Bank Recommendations:

Feb 16, 2011 14:16

After just witnessing the shafting of my employer by their bank, which also happens to be the same place that I use, I am looking for a new one to move my accounts to.
So in short, is there a locally owned bank that offers good customer service, and is not inherently evil?

I'll second Vantage. I've been with US Bank for ages and ages and am seriously considering leaving them, post haste. (I haven't yet but only because then I can't hide money from myself at Vantage like I do now!)

I'll add another voice for Vantage Credit Union (the old Educational Employees Credit Union). Course I will have to say that I have had no problems with USBank (well a hiccup here and there but nothing bad) and I have been a customer of theirs since the days of United Postal Savings. BOA I would stay the hell away from. I will note you did say which banking institution you are planning on leaving so hopefully nobody recommended them back to you :).

Max...

Which bank was it?

I would recommend both Fifth Third and Pulaski because I deal with 5/3 for my personal checking account and they're always super friendly to me and have helped me when I overdrafted, going so far as to call me to let me know it was happening and that they could take some out of my next direct deposit to cover it and they got rid of the fee for me. I work at Coffee Cartel, which deals with Pulaski on a daily basis and they're very friendly and quick with our business transactions.

St. Louis Community Credit Union is pretty good. Not always great, but never unpleasant service; rates & fees are in line with reality. They arranged our mortgage refinance and it was a fairly mess-free process. I do not know of any way in which they are EVIL. So there you go.

I banked with Regions for about two years and liked them. I over-drafted three times (always the day before pay day, so I covered it right away) and the fees were waved every time. I over-drafted at BoA once and they took out some huge fee every day that I hadn't covered it, and they wouldn't freeze it. By the time I could pay it it was around $150 and the thing stayed on my credit for like 3 years. I couldn't get a bank account with anyone until Regions. The only reason I left is because I moved back west where there aren't any branches and now I belong to a credit union. US, BoA, Chase, and Compass are banks I know to stay away from.
