Charlie heaved as he moved the woodstove across the wide wooden floorboards.
The stone hearth in the center of the cider house would kick off enough heat to keep him from freezing, especially if he slept in the loft where he’d set up his bed.
But he didn’t fancy the idea of cooking over a fire all the time. Even in his tent in Romania, he’d had a full kitchen. This was funny, because people often referred to their living arrangements out there as primitive. This old stone box of a building was far more so.
His aim was to repair the broken stove and get it in working order as the first addition to his new kitchen. Or rather, the corner that would eventually become a kitchen. The
cider house was large, probably about 1500 square feet, but it consisted of only one room, plus the loft.
He figured over time he could break up the space - add some walls to create smaller rooms. For now, though, it would be enough. He’d spent the last three weeks on nothing but sleeping and working, and it was habitable. Even comfortable.
And now that he was sleeping here, he was anxious to get out more, catch up with his siblings, and see who else was back in town.
He took another long look at his new home.
It’s getting there, he thought.
