Summary: Rabastan investigates an explosion.
Completion: Complete

Rabastan finished hiding away yet another artifact from the Dark Lord and prepared to hike out a mile or so before assuming his animagus form. Aside from the magical protections on the deep shaft, he preferred not to use any magic in the cave area lest he draw attention to the cache. He had just lifted his pack to his shoulder, when he heard a shriek and an explosion in the distance.

Locating the source of a disturbance as a wolf was hardly difficult, but he knew that a less than cautious investigation could get him killed. He carefully approached from downwind and found the area crackling from a burst of accidental magic that had exploded a boulder. A scrawny, filthy child* was huddled crying against a tree. A bear lied several feet away, sharp pieces of rock pierced its body.

This wasn't the first lone child he'd come across in this war, but this one was definitely in the worst shape. Although he was appalled at her condition, the girl - at least he thought it was a girl - wasn't in any immediate danger. Rabastan was relieved that he had time to work out his approach when he saw what she had done to the last animal that had her cornered.

Despite a frequent wish that he had a knut for every time he had been called "nice doggie," Rabastan knew that younger kids often responded better to him in wolf form than human, so "nice doggie" it would be. He dropped on his belly, whined, whimpered, and scooted toward her slowly. After she looked up, he added the tail-wagging bit for good measure.

"Dug!"

Well, it wasn't a "nice doggie" but Rabastan thought it would do as an opening. Next came the hard part, getting the little witch to someone who could look after her that wasn't likely to hex him on sight.
