He hadn't always been a Scrooge. As a boy, he'd adored Christmas the same as most children. And even as a young man, he'd liked it well enough, being with his family -- and his girl.
That was the problem now. He had neither family nor girl, and he'd once been romantic (or maybe just stupid) enough to propose on Christmas Eve. It left him with bitter memories, and now he tried to ignore the Christmas lights and music and decorations. He'd put up nothing at home and did his best to pretend it wasn't there at work. He didn't try to make anyone else miserable, he just preferred to opt out. He'd already bought and sent off presents for his mother and father, as well as for the kids in the Whitecalf clan, and that was all he planned to do. Now that he had some limited electricity out to his tent, he planned to spend Christmas playing video games.
So he wove among the Christmas shoppers, looking for groceries.
