Tracey wasn't sure what she was supposed to do. Violet had recently decided that a flat just wasn’t good enough - Millicent and Ella lived in a house after all - and so had taken it upon her to search for a house for the two of them.. Without telling Tracey of course. She'd decided that mummy needed a good Christmas present and that trees and decorations just wouldn't cut the Dijon! No, she was going to buy mummy a house. A real big one. With a big garden for Violet's unicorn - she just knew mummy would buy her one for Christmas - to live in.

Little did Tracey know that on their more recent walks, Violet’s eyes had been hunting out eligible properties for them to live in. No, she’d had no idea that every time they passed a dilapidated cottage or a nicely-presented bungalow, Violet assessed how much work it would take to fix up.

For a girl who was four - even if she was close to five - Tracey was suitably impressed.

Tracey had been curious when Violet had said she’d gotten mummy a Christmas present, even more intrigued when said present wasn’t in the flat. Humouring the little girl and following her, she fully expected to be dragged down to Marcus’ flat and given something ridiculous like a pair of pink socks.

She hadn’t, though.

Instead, Violet had ordered her to put her shoes and coat on and after warding the door closed after her, she’d followed Violet into Stoatshead. Violet had walked determinedly and Tracey was a little fearful of her daughter’s fast stride. Usually the girl dawdled along and looked at the houses lining the verges.. What was up with her?

Coming to an abrupt halt at a house that wasn’t far from a warehouse or Minerva’s house, she arched an eyebrow at Violet who looked well pleased with herself. “Why’ve we stopped?” she asked in a calm voice, not wishing to enrage the child.

“It’s your present, silly! I found it all by myself and we’re gonna live here!” Violet exclaimed, clapping her hands happily and dancing around Tracey who was being very quiet and her mouth was open. Naughty mummy, she’d catch flies!

“It’s- What? No, Violet. We live at Copper Towers, remember? Near daddy?” she asked her daughter, crouching to be at the same level as her. Violet’s eyes were glinting with a mischief she wasn’t sure she liked and she seemed more animated than she had in years. “Violet, do you understand?”

Violet giggled. “No, silly mummy! Daddy helped me. He put wards on so no-one could go in but it’s yours! Promise! An’ now we’re rich, we can buy me lots of rooms and toys!” she squealed, catapulting herself into Tracey’s arms and knocking the two of them over.

Looking up from her upside-down position on the cobbled street at the large, dilapidated house with the almost-gone thatch, unstable looking wooden beams and pretty leaded windows, she contemplated the work that would have to go into it. She already knew that Violet wouldn't have chosen it if it couldn't be made habitable sooner rather than later and she was glad for once of Violet's impatient nature. The left side had caved in slightly which meant that the top bedrooms on that side would be unusable for a while and the rooms underneath completely crushed but she could sort that.. She was sure she could. After all, money was a useful tool and she'd found herself with a lot of it.

Maybe Violet had had the right idea. They couldn't live in a flat forever, after all.

“Thank you.” she said to no-one in particular, causing Violet to explode in a giggling fit once more.
