Su groaned, cuddling underneath the blankets and wishing the damn owl would leave her alone. The tapping grew loader, so with a muttered curse in Mandarin, she went to the window and threw it open.
Oh. She knew this owl. Su quickly found some treats for Lili, letting the owl rest from her long journey. She put the small package aside; she needed time to prepare.
"Lili, was I crazy to come back?" The bird cocked its head and looked at Su; she realized that perhaps talking to the family owl was a sign that she was indeed going around the bend. In Shanghai, I felt British. Now in Stoatshead, I feel Chinese. England is strange and new, and I miss China. Will I ever be at home anywhere in the world?
After making the bed, cleaning the bathroom, and folding her laundry, Su had a cup of oolong tea and decided that she was perhaps ready to open her mother's package. There was a letter on top.
Su,
Are you well? How are you settling in to life in England? It will get easier in time, don't worry. But you need to get out of your apartment and talk to people. Su looked at Lili, who was snoozing in the corner. "She knows me too well." The owl opened her eyes and blinked at Su. "Right. Letter." To that end, I've enclosed your bicycle. I know how much you love it. I also know how much you procrastinate, so you'd better hurry, the shrinking charm will only last for three days. Get some fresh air, it'll help. Then you'll have an appetite for your favorite steamed buns. There's a whole box of them, from your auntie.
Take care of yourself. Your father says hello, and Andrew sends his love.
Mama
Su rifled through the box, finding the steamed buns under a box of tea. She bit into one, thinking about her mother's letter. Much as she hated to admit it, her mother was right. What was the point in fighting to come back to Britain, only to hide away in her room once she arrived? Yes, it was hard. It would get easier. Besides, Su, if it's so tough, you can always go back to Shanghai, she told herself. Well, go on, go. No? All right then, stay in Stoatshead, but if you're going to live here, then live.
"Tomorrow I'll go out and find a job." It felt good to say it out loud, although Lili did not look impressed.
