Severus had been mulling it over, and the more he thought about it, the twitchier he felt. Shacklebolt was an Auror. Oh, ex-Auror if you wanted to quibble, but while you could take the boy out of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, but...
Coming back from Hogwarts, Phineas tucked under his arm, he had felt so sure that he had enough to prove his innocence. Or rather, his non-guilt. He just wasn't sure that going to a man he really didn't know that well, especially after nearly a decade sine last they spoke, seemed an awful risk. Even if Susan liked and trusted him, Snape's paranoia was getting the better of him.
Minerva, on the other hand, had always been level-headed. If anyone would give him a chance, she would. She'd done it before. That said, he wasn't about to break into her home and say "So, how've you been since I murdered our friend in cold blood?" No, he needed a mediator, and the only person he could think of was Granger.
He acted before he could talk himself out of it, grabbing quill and parchment and scratching out a note to her.
Granger,
I have decided that it is time I meet our mutual, tartan-clad friend. As it has been an age since I spoke with her, perhaps you could arrange a meeting. I would hate her to be upset at my lack of correspondence over the years.
