It was simply too quiet. The last of his kids has moved out a week ago, having accepted a job offer in Boston. Even his normally tyrannical house elf was off somewhere, probably helping his oldest niece with her twin daughters. Caradoc couldn't remember the last time he had the house completely to himself. Frankly, he wished it wasn't that way now. Having spent the past 25 years raising 11 children nearly single-handed, left him with little privacy and even less time on his hands.
Caradoc Dearborn was never one to dwell on things. All his life he had worked hard and did what needed doing. He learned his lessons and helped his mother when he was little. He learned to play Beater in Quidditch because the Hufflepuffs needed Beaters. He was a prefect because he knew how important it was to keep order. He took business courses at university while earning his teaching degree because his family needed someone to learn how to deal with his mother's sizable muggle inheritance. He joined the Order of the Phoenix because Dumbledore said the Light needed fighters. He disappeared from Britain because after his wife and extended family were massacred, the 11 surviving children needed a parent.
Now, in an empty house, Caradoc couldn't help but dwell on things. He loved his work. Teaching budding witches and wizards how to control their magic and work spells was immensely satisfying. He really did not want to give up teaching; he had wanted to be a teacher ever since his mother taught him his letters. If he hadn't have had Dumbledore's help obtaining a junior position teaching charms when he came to the states, he probably would have ended up teaching in a muggle school. Unfortunately, he was being pressured into accepting the position as Charms Department Head at the end of year when the current head retired. He really did not want to take the job, because it meant he would only be teaching the senior students. The majority of his time would be spent dealing with administrative duties.
Perhaps what I need is a change. Caradoc had heard through the grapevine that the war in Britain had ended. Perhaps there might be room for him at Hogwarts. No, not Hogwarts, he corrected himself remembering that commotion that occurred even as far away as Louisiana when the ancient school had been destroyed some years back. There might be another school somewhere in England that could use an experienced Charms Instructor, though.
Perhaps it is time to find out. Caradoc started to write.
