It had been a good week, all told. Bookworm was really, finally, open for business. The grand opening had been brilliant and crazy; now things at the bookshop were settling down to a more normal pace. Ron was happy to have Lee Jordan working alongside him on the printing press again. Lee had been gone awhile on a family emergency; now Ron was refreshing Lee's memory about how to operate the press. Lee had picked it up again quickly and between the two of them, the books were fairly flying off the press. In Ron's mind, though, the most important thing that happened the past week was his date with Lavender on the morning of Valentine's Day. He and Lavender had finally called each other boyfriend and girlfriend in public. It was a big step up from the casualness they had wanted when they first started seeing each other; the connection between them (beyond sex) had developed farther and faster than either of them had anticipated. That night Lavender thanked Ron in a very physical way for giving her a memorable Valentine's Day. (Ron would have to thank Harry soon for the condoms; Harry might have been teasing him, but they had come in quite handy that night, being a bit more interesting than the ones Hermione had given him two months ago).

All of which brought Ron, in a roundabout way, to think about Hermione going out with not one but two men. Hermione who, as far as he knew, had never had a proper kiss (he didn't count the two-second fiasco between them years ago). Hermione who, he knew, had never had a date, much less sex, and who had done a fine job of repressing her instincts in that direction for at least the past seven years. Now she'd gone out, on successive evenings, first with Roger then with Cedric. How the bloody hell had that happened? What could she possibly be thinking? Ron was working harder now to understand Hermione, he really was, but this sudden going out with two blokes was just weird. Add to that the fact that Cedric and Roger were good friends, and that both of them were sort of friends with Harry and Ron, and that they both lived in cottages behind the bookshop...well, the whole situation was too complicated. Ron didn't like complicated, and this made his head hurt, especially as he had no idea how either Cedric or Roger really felt about Hermione or her about either of them. Ron might not always (or usually) understand Hermione, but he was fiercely protective of her, and if either Roger or Cedric ever hurt her in any way, they would wish they'd never met him. It was probably time, Ron thought, for him and Harry to talk to Roger and Cedric. It wouldn't do to try to get the four of them together for a chat. That would be too weird, not to mention difficult to pull off. Plus Harry was now working for Roger. So, Ron thought, it would make the most sense for Harry to talk with Cedric (he'd have to tell Harry that) and for Ron himself to talk with Roger.

Having decided all of that late on this Saturday afternoon, Ron wrote a note to Roger, intending to tack it magically to his front door, and set out on the short walk to Roger's cottage. Reaching the summer house, he knocked on the door. Expecting Roger to be away, Ron was about to use a sticking charm to attach his note to the door when it suddenly opened.
