In native tradition, to see an owl in the daytime was a harbinger of death. It was little wonder, then, that Jeff Whitecalf hated owl post. But he was also used to it by this point, and as far as owls went, he supposed Cedric's little Pallas wasn't so bad.
He needed to write a letter because he'd made a decision. There had been three women orbiting Cedric since he'd arrived: Hermione, Hannah and Katie. He hadn't been sure which to ask to build the madodoswan altar, but the curse Hermione suffered created a serious problem. He could also sense her courses were coming and that was powerful magic, the ability to give life, further complicating things. Hannah had known Cedric longer, that was clear. He treated her like a beloved little sister, none too different from the way he treated Jeff's sister. And Jeff thought Hannah might be especially open to the earth magic. The Mother talked to her.
Yet Jeff settled on Katie, and wasn't sure why except that he was following instinct. She hadn't known Cedric (well) as long as Hannah, but there was some ... blending there, some innate mutual comprehension, and it was that connectional magic that he was seeking as Cedric had no female blood kin here.
Thus, sitting down at Cedric's desk on Cedric's first day at his new job, Jeff wrote a letter:
Dear Katie,
This is Jeff, Cedric's friend. Would you be willing to drop by Cedric's place today or tomorrow during the day to build something? It shouldn't take long. We're doing a sweat on Sunday, and the altar for the lodge has to be built by a woman's hands, someone who knows Cedric. Let me know.
P.S. If you're having your period, you can't do it. The magics interfere.
