When Hannah arrived for work that Monday afternoon, she took one look at him and started giggling. At his baffled expression, she walked over to undo his tie, pulling it free and holding it up for his inspection.
He blinked. How had that got around his neck? He could have sworn he'd pulled out a burgundy one with pale blue stripes to match his blue button-down. But that was the fern-green paisley one that had been hanging next to it. How on earth had he not noticed which tie he'd put on? And he'd been wearing that all morning? Su must think he was a dork. "Er, thanks?" he told Hannah, who just hugged him quickly before sitting down to work.
Matters didn't improve when he went into Exeter to charge his computer battery and get coffee. He put honey in it instead of cream because he grabbed the wrong container. "Fuck," he hissed under his breath, dumping that coffee in the bin and getting another. He tried to read his political blogs but gave up when he'd read the same paragraph four times and still didn't know what it said. So he went back to the museum and stared out his window, thinking about Sunday, and Katie, and dancing with no music. And kisses. Wonderful kisses. Woolgathering, his mother would have called it. He hoped Katie was getting more work done.
Turning back to his desk, he pulled out a page of blank parchment and wrote:
Hey you --
I put on the wrong tie this morning and then put honey in my coffee this afternoon. I haven't got much work done all day. Can't stop thinking about you. I hope you're faring better.
Fondly,
Ced
At the bottom, he sketched a comedic image of himself, sitting at a desk with his computer open in front of him, his chin in hand, staring off at nothing with little hearts over his head.
Attaching the letter to the leg of the museum owl, he sent it off out his window.
