Fleur took a deep, comforting sip of her coffee as she sat in her little breakfast nook, silently bemoaning Stoathead’s lack of a proper café. With a free hand she scratched the back of Babette’s head as the she-owl gazed lovingly upon her mistress. An ensuing coo made Fleur smile.

“Oui, Babette, you have acquired un amoureux, have you not?” she asked the bird as it slowly blinked its black eyes. “Does he treat you well, my friend? You should listen to one who knows the ways of love…do not tolerate less than what you know you deserve.”

The regal bird swiveled its head this way, then that, to rotate nearly full circle when a small fowl flew past the kitchen window.

“So when will the owlets come? Soon I hope,” Fleur continued, “You want them so much; I can tell, petite maman.” Babette extended her fragile leg to her mistress, giving Fleur permission to attach a note. When the note was secured Fleur gently tapped the bird’s hooked beak. “I did not tell you, Babette doux, thank you. You saved my life zat horrible day. Take this to Roger Davies, S'il vous plaît.”

Then with a wing beat that sent Fleur’s hair gliding back over her shoulders, the owl went about its' task.

“Bonjour Roger,

It has been too long since we have talked and visited one another, my friend. Many things are happening in your life, I am sure, as they are in mine. I despise when life becomes so busy and regimented that we forget what is good in it, like friends. We must meet some time soon, you and I, and catch up with each other. In the meantime I hope you are well and happy and that life and love are treating you kindly.

À tout à l'heure,
Fleur”
