By late evening, Hermione was bored. She knew she should probably clean or possibly nap, but she felt a restless energy that wouldn’t let her focus on chores. Instead, she paced around her room and looked out the window occasionally. It had been foggy most of the day, which had been ideal, in her opinion, for a walk but not much else. She’d done some cleaning, owled an inquiry about a possible job, though she wasn’t counting on it working out, and had had dinner. The job interview was at least a step towards putting down roots, which was good.
It bothered her more than she wanted to admit that she couldn’t relax. Logically, she knew she should be happy and pleased that their quest was complete. They’d been successful, even if it took forever and a day, so there shouldn’t be this edginess that had her unable to stop looking over her shoulder. Her bag wasn’t even unpacked yet, and it had been nearly a week since they moved in. If she kept this up, she’d drive herself crazy, which wouldn’t be good since they didn’t even have a proper asylum.
She sighed and sat on her bed, leaning forward to rest her head in her hands. Ron and Harry were both busy (well, Ron was probably napping or learning billiards and Harry was doing whatever it was Harry did these days when he wanted time to himself), which left her at loose ends. She was really only comfortable around them, something that had become obvious lately. It had been nice to see Viktor again, and Shacklebolt had been polite, especially considering the fact she’d nearly hurt him, and Diggory, well, she wasn’t yet sure what she thought about him. But she’d not been able to just relax and be herself around anyone in so long that she wasn’t even sure she remember how. She’d never been what one would call social, but she’d been friendly enough and had people she considered friends. Now, other than Harry and Ron, she really felt quite alone.
It was times like this that she really envied Ron. He’d been through the same hell that she and Harry had, but he’d managed to rise above it and not let it change him too much. There were changes, a maturity that he’d grown into and other small things that one would notice if one looked close enough. But, really, he was still just Ron in all the ways that mattered. He didn’t look at everyone suspiciously or have to sleep on the floor to get any rest. She stood up and started pacing again, mentally running through list after useless list just to give her mind something to concentrate on other than her utter lack of productivity.
If the Zabini job didn’t work out, she’d find something else. She needed something to keep her busy because, otherwise, she would go insane. And that couldn’t happen because the boys needed her. She was horrible with living things, but had to admit to looking forward to working on the blasted garden just to have something to do that didn’t leave her smelling like cleaning fluid or stuck inside with four walls that sometimes felt as if they were slowly closing in on her. Maybe Ron would want to go to town soon. If he did, she’d go with him and just smile politely at people instead of talking and scaring them away. It would be nice to have a friend that would let her not annoy Harry and Ron with constant companionship, though she supposed she’d get used to being alone easily enough. It used to be much easier, after all.
As she walked back and forth, she noticed the different pieces of parchment on her desk. Zabini’s handwriting brought a frown, mostly because she hated the nagging thought that something was just Not Quite Right about that. Then her gaze fell on Viktor’s letters, and her frown curved into a slight smile. He was still such a dear, and she was pleased to have run into him again, and to not have scared him off with her brusque personality of late. He was having problems with his daughter’s mum, though, and that wasn’t good.
She glanced outside, pleased to note that it was dark enough for her to go on a little mission without being seen. She got her coat and wand before leaving her room, calling a general ’Going for a walk’ to the boys. Once she was outside, she looked at the sky and took a deep breath, letting it out slowly. She focused on the location she had in mind before she Apparated to the library in town. Surely they’d have some law books that weren’t damaged.
