It looked more like a flea market than a farmer's market, with witches and wizards manning tables that boasted an array of items they'd scavanged from uninhabitable houses (some of which was probably junk). There were also the usual stands of canned and homegrown vegetables, although here in November, some of the latter looked a bit on the sorry side. Many of the tables boasted signs that read some variation on, "Pounds preferred, barter accepted, prices negotiable." Nobody seemed to mention galleons.
Cedric didn't have a lot to barter, but he did (unlike many) have a limited amount of actual money. Hopefully that would change soon, and he'd be able not only to pay without counting every penny, but hire some workers to help him (re-)build his house. It would provide a little work, even if it was temporary.
Just now, though, he was being supported by his parents. That was a bit embarrassing for a 27-year-old, but the fact he had parents able and willing to help put him in a better position than many -- and he wasn't ignorant of that. Or ungrateful. He had a pocket full of coins and some five- and ten-pound notes. He'd been to the bank the day before when he'd gone into Exeter for his job interviews. And his larder was virtually out of food.
Parking his bike in the racks off outside and putting a charm on it, he unhooked his shopping basket and headed inside the building among the makeshift stalls, seeking bread and meat and canned goods, and maybe a few vegetables that didn't look too frost-bitten. He'd go to Susan for milk and eggs and most vegetables, as usual, later this week, and bring her some of the things he'd picked up for her in Exeter from her last list.
