Caradoc Dearborn married Serena Westbridge almost immediately out of Hogwarts. He'd been interested in the perky Ravenclaw from the moment she managed to levitate her feather before anyone else in his first year Charms class. The interest turned into a fancy by his fourth year and only grew, until it had bloomed into a strong, mutual affection, that turned into love by the time the two of them left Hogwarts.

Together, the pair made the decision to wait until after leaving Hogwarts to become intimate. Caradoc smiled remembering the very practical and reasoned arguments Serena presented for waiting and her nervous face when she broached the topic. He had assumed she'd want to wait to marry and had been fully prepared to respect that wish. Finding out that Serena wanted him as much as he wanted her had left him so giddy that his best mates started teasing him about actually doing the deed and refused to believe he was like that only from talking about it. Caradoc had been happy with just kissing and touching, as long as he had some privacy to toss off. Finding privacy for himself was much easier than finding privacy for himself and Serena both, being from two different houses. He and the Prewett boys had found some secret passages that worked well for snogs, but though Fabian didn't seem to mind using them for more, both Caradoc and Gideon were marriage minded. Neither of them had any intention of taking their future brides on the floor or up against a wall. At least not the first time.

Shortly after leaving Hogwarts, he made love with Serena for the first time. While it wasn't precisely earth shattering, both of them had enjoyed the parts leading up to actual loss of their virginities enough to try again. It was the trying again that lead to earth shattering, and the earth shattering that lead to them wanting to marry that summer rather than waiting a year as they originally planned. From the beginning, they agreed that Caradoc would be the one to take the contraceptive potion, as Serena had a mild reaction to one of the ingredients. Together, the couple decided he would stop using the potion after their wedding. They wanted a family and Serena's practical proposals and desire to start trying sooner rather than later won him over. The young couple lacked neither funds nor support in the way of family and elves, and Caradoc thought that if he had to, he could drop his classes at Oxford until after he finished his apprenticeship if he needed more time with his family. Everything had worked out well however, and by the time he obtained his degree, teaching certificate and charms mastery, the couple had two children, a four-year and a four-month. Two months later, his wife and most of his extended family had been wiped out by Death Eaters.

After his wife died, and the initial flurry of activity of setting up a home in America and starting his teaching career was past, Caradoc took some time to mourn. However, it wasn't in him to live in the past, and he knew Serena wouldn't have wanted him to either. So Caradoc decided that it was time he moved on. The only problem was moving on with 11 children wasn't easy. He had no shortage of first dates, his sense of humor, flirty manner and boyish good looks almost always had women saying yes to his invitations. What became difficult was getting a second date with anyone looking for more than a casual thing. Caradoc wanted a wife and even hoped to have another child or two. He had never been interested in casual sex and after two meaningless encounters, he decided there was no point in being with someone if there wasn't some sort of connection beyond physical attraction. His hand worked, and if it wasn't as pleasurable as a woman's body, it was less emotionally disappointing. He stopped routinely taking the contraceptive potion for the second time in his life and was celibate for nearly a decade.

The summer his oldest nephew graduated university, he volunteered to helped Cai watch over the younger kids so that Caradoc could take a vacation alone. During his trip, he met a recently divorced lady a few years younger than himself and gave in to the tempation of a holiday romance, hoping something more might develop. Caradoc's father had made sure that all his sons understood what they needed to know about protection charms and their limitations, and stressed the importance of using either a potion instead or some barrier method in conjunction with the charms to be sure. Caradoc had given the same talk to all six of 'his' boys and a similar one to the five girls. After all of that to fail to follow the advice himself would be stupid. That vacation, charms in conjunction with condoms became his method of protection, considering he did not know much about the lady's history. It was the method he continued to rely on during his few affairs from then on.

Had Caradoc invited Irma to stay last Sunday, he would have had to rely on charms and condoms. It was one of the other reasons aside from her having to work Monday that had him holding back. The two of them knew enough about the other's histories by this time that he hoped she would be willing to do without the barrier. The thought of sinking into her warm body with nothing between them was far too tempting. He'd make sure Irma agreed first, but he hoped she would. But if he planned to make love with her tomorrow night without a condom, he needed to make sure he obtained a potion before then.

After finishing up his work for the day, Caradoc walked down to the apothecary. He was surprised to find that there were none available in Stoatshead Hill or anywhere else in England that they could recommend. He apparated home instead of walking and told Cai where he was headed. He had considered waiting until he was in France, but if there was a problem in Paris obtaining ingredients too, it was likely to ruin the mood. Caradoc decided that it was early enough to take his port key to New Orleans. The area surrounding the school and university was littered with apothecaries and potions were plentiful. Caradoc would make his purchases and check on the final staging of the library books that would be delivered next week. After all, it was only practical to see to both tasks while he was there. He'd even try to work in a visit with his grandkids while he was there. Perhaps a lack of potions in Stoats wasn't so bad after all if it meant he took time to visit family.
