After checking that the warming charms around the cribs on the ward were working properly, Lavender made her way over to the newest addition to the community as she started to cry. There were three babies on the ward at the moment, one who had been in for nearly a month because he had been so very premature and was still incredibly tiny, another who was due to be discharged tomorrow and then there was Crystal, who was now six hours old. Really, it had been quite a busy week, Lavender thought as she lifted the tiny girl from the crib and she hoped it wouldn't be too busy on the ward over Christmas, even though one of the women in her care was due on the 27th. "Amanda? I think she's hungry," Lavender told the mother gently, handing her over. "Let's have another go at breast feeding, shall we?"

Lavender gave a fond smile as she watched Crystal calm down in Amanda's arms. Really, in her line of work it was hard not to be a bit broody and think of having children one day, but Lavender had to stay professional. Besides, if she even dared mentioned having children to Ron, she was pretty sure she'd scare him off, and that was the last thing she wanted to do, especially as they had just moved in together. She shivered at the thought of going home - the cold snap didn't seem to be going anywhere and the heating in their house was iffy at best.

"Lavender, you can go now." Jacqui emerged from the office, carrying her usual clipboard.

Glancing at the clock, Lavender frowned. "Are you sure?" she asked, a little warily. Jacqui was five months pregnant herself, one of three midwives on the ward who were expecting at the moment. "I can stay until Sue gets here, if you want. She's never more than ten minutes late..."

"Go. I'm sure you need to get home to that bloke of yours."

Lavender grinned. "He's probably at work. Although... actually, I need to pop to the market. I want to pick something for dessert."

"Got you cooking and cleaning for him, has he?"

"He cooks for me, too," Lavender protested. "It just happens to be my turn tonight." She smiled. "Okay, I'll see you tomorrow."

She dashed to the staffroom, trying not to yawn. Lavender shrugged off her robes, replacing them with a warmer pair of her own. She then put on her winter cloak and pulled a hat onto her head. The last thing she wanted was to get ill right now, so she wrapped up the best she could.

Lavender could barely stand the cold as soon as she got outside the hospital and Apparated straight to the market. There was no sense in walking or spending any more time outside that necessary in this weather.
