Down

As of the 29th of this month, I will have been back to work for a year and now more than ever, I've been getting really down about not being at home. Long post under the cut. ( Read more... )

I'm really sorry you're feeling so bad. I can understand your hesitation and all of your dillemas and I can't tell you what I'd do if I were in your shoes. You just have to decide what's the most important for you and your family. You should do what makes you happy and it will also make your children happy.

I think changing to part-time work might be a good solution for you. It sounds like a reasonable compromise between what you would like to do and what you feel you should do.

Thanks for the support! I'm thinking part-time work would be the best option. The government is a fairly flexible work place but I need to chat with an HR person to get my options organized. Unfortunately, in the government, that takes time as we are not assigned a specific Human Resources professional. I'll keep you posted.

Aww Tracey, I'm sorry I hadn't seen this earlier, but I haven't been on LJ in a few days and missed it ( ... )

I'm still waiting on my HR department to get back to me but I'm still convinced that at this point, part-time will be the way to go for me. As an employer, the federal government is one of the most flexible in terms of work arrangements, so for the time being, I'd prefer to stay with them.

I'll try part-time first and then if it still seems hard, I'll give it up. However, as I mentioned, Chris's job isn't 100% great lately so I really don't feel it's the time to give it up completely.

It's so frustrating waiting to speak to anyone in Human Resources, though!

I'll give you a call sometime in the next week or so. I think we need to chat! :) Thanks for the support.

Okay, give me a call next week, (not Tuesday, I'll be out Tuesday night) and we can hash this out, it sucks to about the uncertainty of Chris's job - grr, but it will work out, I'm sure of it!

I'm rarely on LJ anymore and I'm sorry I missed this immediately after you posted, but I completely understand. I realize I'm fortunate to have the hours I do, but I still feel as though I'm missing out because I have to leave the kids each morning and can't see them off to school. I'm fortunate to have good neighbours who drive the kids to school, but it's still something I want to be doing myself. However, being home when they get home from school helps (although life still manages to be a bit of a blur on most days anyway given their busy extracurricular life).

I think you've pretty much decided what to do, TK. In the end, you must do what feels right for you and your family. To look back and regret the years you spent working full-time will really feel horrible.

You'll make the right choice. I just know it.

A belated thank you for your empathy, Abby!

So, almost a month later, on October 19, I've finally arranged to see someone from HR -- it wasn't even through official means. I haven't heard back from them. Grrrrrrrr... government.

After a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend followed by a hectic couple of days, I'm back to wanting to quit entirely, but we'll see what Monday brings. I then have my usual bilateral meeting with my boss on Tuesday so I can bring it up them.

I will keep you posted.
