Five Regrets Severus has about Remus Lupin

No one had to teach Severus to regret. It seemed as though he had an overactive sense of it, actually. It never really made him think before he spoke, but after he spoke… well he couldn’t stop thinking, could he? Funny how so many of the regrets that really stuck with him involved Remus Lupin.

5. To this day Severus gets a funny feeling in his gut when he sees Honeydukes Fudge. It isn’t that he wished he’d accepted it when Remus tried to make a gift of some fourth year. It wasn’t even that he regretted throwing the whole parcel from the nearest window, or the string of obscenities that followed the act. It was just the right sort or reaction, given the circumstances.

Severus would just rather not remember going out in the middle of the night and retrieving it. It was a funny sort of thing to do and tainted the taste of fudge with thoughts of Remus forever.

4. Severus can count the number of times he has struck out with his fists on one hand. Two involved his father, two involved the dark lord, and one (just one) was all about Remus Lupin. He’d tricked Severus into believing that they were both human. He’d spent nearly a year offering that false, calm smile and demonstrating all the clever little things he could do with a wand, as though he was actually a wizard and in one night made Severus see neither of them were really above slavering animal cruelty.

Severus often looks back at that moment Remus first hit the ground, hands outstretched in front of his body with no hope of stopping the blow or catching himself. One punch would have been enough, as twenty didn’t make Severus feel better. A kick to an animal on the ground from an animal on his feet and neither of them had any right to be angry. He should have at the very least helped Remus to the hospital wing.

3. Severus wishes that once, just once, he had poisoned Remus’ Wolfsbane. It would bring a hardened sort of satisfaction to watching the distrustful looks shot him by his former allies.

2. Severus always liked the way Remus smiled when Severus started ranting and raging at him. These days when no one offered him so much as a smirk of appreciation for his wit he regrets never having told Remus that.

1. There are at least three or four times Severus knows if he’d stopped short of his final insult Remus would have forgiven him all of them. When he thinks of the innumerable ways he could have pushed things toward the better rather then exacerbating them, he feels the heaviest pang of regret, just for a moment.

Then he remembers things worked out just the way they were supposed to have happened, and he was never meant to be anything more then what he was to Remus Lupin.
