The drums are pounding as the warriors strike them loudly. It’s a sound he’ll never forget; a day he’ll always remember.

The old woman is saying something; he can’t hear it- all he hears are those drums, pounding in his ears.

To La we return the fallen; Tui watch over them as they sleep.

With her final words, the canoes are pushed into the water. He watches as his mother- lying peacefully in the tiny boat- begins to drift away.

No! His sister screams and begins to run after the vessel. They are knee-deep in the freezing water when he catches her and holds her against his chest.

It’s okay, Katara; it’s okay. Mother’s going away for a while but it’s okay. Everything’s okay.

She only continues to wail as he rocks her and whispers in her ears.

That night when they are alone in the small room, she curls up beside him, her head against his heart. Don’t leave me; everyone leaves.

He places kisses on her forehead and smoothes her hair.

Don’t worry, Katara. Your brother’s not going anywhere.

They fall asleep like that, a twisted tangle of brother and sister- his arms around her, her arms around him.

Outside the drums are still pounding.

“Outside is too risky,” he had said.

She had arched an eyebrow, “I’m sorry- I thought you wanted to see me, Admiral. Clearly, I was mistaken.”

“Princess, I will see you anywhere- provided it is indoors.”

She smiled. “I know just the place.”

“Are you insane?” His voice is a hushed whisper of disbelief.

“I never pictured you a coward, Commander.”

“Admiral.”

She smiles and waves her hand dismissively. “Kiss me.”

Against his better judgment, he does, his mouth moving down against her throat, her collarbone. She reaches for him- her nails graze his face- her back arches up, curving away from the Fire Lord’s throne.

There is a clang- that satisfying sound that metal against metal makes. It’s the sound of a challenge; the sound of a fight.

She looks at him and there is a hint of admiration in her eyes. She concedes, “You’re good.”

He smirks and tightens his grip on the handle. “Thanks- I know.”

The bounty hunter leans in closely; metal meets metal once again; their faces are barely a hair’s width apart. Her mouth twists into a smile.

“But I’m better.”

Without taking her eyes from his, she raises the tin mug in her hands. “Bartender! One more round!”

(And, yes, they are indeed trying to outdrink each other. I am so sorry but the crack? It just sort of wrote itself.)

It was the second day after their group of three had become one of four. Katara had left to go to the market, dragging a protesting Aang behind her.

Which left Sokka and Toph sitting in silence alone.

“So…” Sokka started, trying to think of something to say. “You’re blind, huh? That must suck.”

There was an awkward pause.

“No, wait! That didn’t come out right! I mean-” He stopped abruptly to look at Toph.

She was laughing. “You’re right- it does suck sometimes.”

And she smiled at him, a genuine expression that made the older boy look away out of embarrassment.

“I mean, I can’t even see you blushing.”
