basic massage and advanced massage

So when is a massage known as a basic massage?  When does it become advanced?  I feel that this fine line is never identified when it comes to massage therapy training/education.  Let me give you an example

This comes up in martial arts a lot as well. People want to learn the new flavor of the day technique and whatnot without having a mastery of the fundamentals.

very true. It seems almost every profession/hobby is like this. It is not best way to do things.
