One thing I've noticed.

I feel like I'm getting better at making the kind of photos I want to make.... That or I've gotten much better at making my mistakes look good.

Either way it's the same - progress. Most people don't notice mistakes you feel you've made unless you point them out, short of blatant missteps in the photographic process that would be deemed a mistake by anyone. But when you start to realize, and overcome the details that have made photos previously either "almost there..." or "good, but it's not really jumping out like I'd hoped!" that's true progress. My friend Paige, who I wrote more about in '03-'05 when we were actively photographing and sharing a studio used to be my backseat driver to help me realize where my work would 'almost make it' or where it would hit a wall and stop getting better. I saw what she was saying immediately, and for a few shoots it was hugely helpful to have her back there before the shutter fired, and to say "hey wait - move this, change that, and here's why" and she'd often let me take the photo I had, then take her photo of how she'd change it, and the results were clear ( ... )
