The Commonwealth Games http://www.melbourne2006.com.au/Channels/ are like a smaller version of the Olympics. The population of the commonwealth is approx. a third of the global population, so that'll give you an idea of the size. It's being held in Australia (Melbourne) and the last games were held in England (Manchester), four years ago.
Here's a brief meaning of the Commonwealth;
The Commonwealth is a unique family of developed and developing nations, a voluntary association of independent sovereign states spread over every continent and ocean. From Africa to Asia, from Pacific shores to the Caribbean, the Commonwealth's 1.7 billion people make up 30% of the world's populationYeah, it's good to listen, but nice to get a word in here and there

"The Commonwealth" being the British commonwealth - an association of independent sovereign states, almost all of which are former territories of the British Empire. (full list of countries is here.
You're missing some really good stuff - in the pool, at the velodrome, in the triathalon, the women's marathon (sprint to the finish, after 2.5 hours of running!), and the women's basketball - Malawi beat South Africa, then the girls rolled around on the floor in celebration!
The Rugby 7s were horrible - in the game for bronze, an Aussie had a bad head-clash with a Fijian, and lay on the ground convulsing. It was terrible. I've seen guys carried off the rugby field on stretchers, and have even seen a guy airlifted via chopper, but I've never seen anyone fitting. I felt ill.
Caught some of it now. The sevens was exciting, and I heard about the injury - fortunately it wasn't shown on TV.
Heard about the marathon too, Thing is we get our highlights prog. just...about.....now! So it's sometime after the action finishes, and we're always behind.
